Amazing Shows to Visit around Syracuse

Here are two completely wonderful shows to take yourself and anybody else you can!

#1   Pepper Market is happening this Saturday, December 8th from 10am to 5pm. From the founders of the fabulous Salt Market, this new HOTHOT show features 30 creative artists and designers offering all items priced at $30 or under! At these prices, with the exceptional quality of work that will be there, you are sure to find many brilliant gifts for holiday giving to others or to yourself. Some of the items that will be there include handbound books, letterpressed cards, screenprinted posters, a book vending machine, a plethora of t-shirts, super live music and so much more. For directions and more info, check out http://www.saltmarketsyracuse.com/blog or http://www.facebook.com/saltcityurbanartcraftmarket

A Booklace (mini book necklace) from Amaranth Press and Bindery

#2   Pulled, Pressed and Screened: Important American Prints is an outstanding, not to be missed exhibition at SU Art Galleries on view until January 6th. These prints cover a wide breadth of techniques ranging from experimental to more traditional, encompassing a multitude of differing artistic visions. Tracing the beginnings of printmaking as an expressive medium rather than simply illustrative, each piece stamps the mark of the artist telling his or her story with their particular medium in their particular time. This staggering travel through time in American printmaking displays forceful works in etching, lithography, screenprinting, embossing, cardboard cutouts, various combinations and et cetera. Highly recommended! Find more info at http://suart.syr.edu

Sarah Bryant Lecture at Hobart Now Online.

Sarah Bryant of Big Jump Press published an article on the making of Biography entitled "Evolution of an Artist’s Book" in the last issue of The Bonefolder, Vol 8. She recently spoke about Biography and her latest work Fond at Hobart and William Smith College in scenic Geneva, NY. These works explore what "we" are made of and defines us, as well as the extent to which small, personal items encapsulate the bigger picture. Assistant Professor of Architectural Studies Kirin Makker introduces the lecture and curated the accompanying process oriented exhibit in Houghton House.

Those that could not make it can view the lecture below

Syracuse University Library

Reconstructing Diderot: Eighteenth Century French Bookbinding
A lecture and workshop by Jeffrey S. Peachey
November 1, 3 p.m.
Bird Library, Syracuse University

We are  pleased to invite you, your colleagues, and students to the 2012 lecture in the Syracuse University Library's Brodsky Series for the Advancement of Library Conservation.

On Thursday, November 1, Jeffrey S. Peachey, a book conservator, tool maker, and historian of the book will present an illustrated lecture entitled Reconstructing Diderot: Eighteenth Century French Bookbinding. The lecture will be held in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons on the first floor of Bird Library at 3 p.m. with reception to follow.

sawing the spine

In this image-driven, fast-paced overview of eighteenth century French bookbinding, Peachey will examine the larger questions associated with the history of craft and material culture, the transmission of textual information, and, of course, the history of bookbinding. Book structures of the late eighteenth century represent one of the most radical transformations since the invention of the multi-section codex: by the mid-nineteenth century, the machine made cloth case binding begins to dominate book structures. Peachey will illustrate the historical context of how these books were made and discuss physical evidence found in documentation by Diderot, Dudin, and other sources. Peachey will give particular attention to the tools and techniques used to produce these bindings.
I look forward to welcoming you.

With best regards,
Peter D. Verheyen
Head of Preservation and Conservation

The Brodsky Series for the Advancement of Library Conservation is endowed through a generous gift by William J. '65, G' 68 and Joan Brodsky '67, G'68 of Chicago, Illinois. Intended to promote and advance knowledge of library conservation theory and practice, the endowment has been used to sponsor lectures and hands-on workshops by prominent library conservators.

A Book Eating Party!

Hello, Friends! It's springtime and things are sprouting up everywhere! We've been busy putting together an exciting event to entice and surprise your senses. This April's Fools Day will be a day the likes of which Syracuse has not seen before. With gracious co-hosting by Szozda Gallery, we cordially invite you to a Book Eating Party.

A book eating party?! What kind of madness is this, you may ask. More commonly known as an edible book festival, this is actually a very popular ongoing event amongst cuisine-inspired bibliophiles and book-loving gourmets. Since its first incarnation in 1990, more and more people have gotten the urge to create books and book-themed sculptures with eatables such as bread, graham crackers, kale, chocolate, pretzels, etc. Come join us on April 1st as we celebrate nourishing books and food in ways that are silly, sublime, creative, witty, delicious and great fun! Be prepared for a wonderfully unique event with fabulous raffle items, a make-your-own-book station, thrilling refreshments and genteel friends.

If you would like to participate by bringing your own creation, bring it to the gallery at 1 o'clock along with a sheet that has your name, book title, and all ingredients listed. Entries may be book shaped such as a codex, accordion, scroll, tablet, etc. They may also be based on a pun of a book title or depict a particular book cover that is displayed next to the piece.

If you would like to contribute to the refreshments fund or donate an item for our raffle, your name will be proudly proclaimed along with promotional materials you may wish to display. For further information or to make a donation, please email saltcitybookarts@gmail.com. As a new group in town, we look forward to support from our community of fellow bookbinders, letterpressers, printmakers, book artists, designers and aficionados of the book arts.

Sunday, April 1st. 1 - 4pm, book eating at 3pm. Szozda Gallery located at 501 W Fayette Street, Syracuse, NY. Free and open to the public.
