Kadie Salfi, Non-toxic photo etching

Come discover the fun and ease of solar plate etching! Solar-plate etching is a quick, simple and non-toxic alternative to the traditional photo etching process, using the sun or our new exposing unit and water instead of acid to etch the plates. We will learn to expose, develop and print solar plates using photo positives or drawings on transparencies. There will be a strong emphasis on experimentation. Please bring 5"x 7" photo positives or transparencies with drawings to class. Previous etching experience required.Neil Berger, Dark field monotype

The subtractive monotype, also known as the reductive method, or dark field monotype, entails rolling up the plate with ink first. Then the image is wiped out of the darkened field, with a variety of tools such as rags or sticks.

In this two-day workshop you will learn how to make a few versatile structures-for sketching out your ideas in a simple pamphlet that, in case you work anything like me, includes pockets for your less organized ideas, or for giving new life to your artwork itself. We will explore several different folds and stitches that will allow you to create simple "stages" for creative projects: pamphlets with multiple folds, concertina bindings, and a couple of three-dimensional structures. Bring your ideas or simply join us for some inspiration.

In this class, students will learn the basic techniques of making color woodcuts. We will focus on registration, mixing inks, planning a reduction or a multiple woodblock image and edition a final print. A prior knowledge of woodcuts is not required. Professional tools will help make this class more enjoyable. "Karen Kunc's recent prints were created in response to living in and conceptualizing on natural and human processes that affect environment, that contrast ways and means, and outcomes for life. The artist observes and responds to visual sensations of iconic sources - gridiron scaffolding, repetition of window frames, decaying fragments; she conceptualizes patterns - of channels and pathways as flowing movement or pulsing energy; sounds evoke concentric rings suggestive of rhythmic growth or expansion; aerial perspectives offer viewpoints of suburban sprawl and mining wastelands. The artist considers the imbalances of architecture over nature, of human efforts related in scale to mountain ranges.
Within the last several years, Kunc has deliberately provoked her senses by living and working in New York, Vancouver, Italy, Egypt, all around the country, and in Nebraska, her home. She has been evolving the ongoing "Urban/Rural Divide" series, and has moved beyond. Her series leads her to understand that the "divide" is never so clear-cut, and the inevitable order of life is fluid, with shared concerns and sympathies. Therefore, her visual metaphors continue to be related to life cycles, webs and linkages, even as "Darwinian" order prevails.
Karen Kunc is the Willa Cather Professor and Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has done many artist residencies around the world and has received numerous awards. Kunc's work can be found in many public collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; Univeristy of Washington, Seattle Washington, and the Jyvaskyla Art Museum, Finland." Sarah Bryant Artists books & Alternative book structures

In this course students will learn a variety of simple structures that can be combined to make complex and innovative books. We will start with the accordion and pamphlet and move from there! We'll discuss how to make books directly from prints or drawings as well as how to add smaller pieces, like photographs or smaller prints, with simple paper engineering. I'll happily discuss any projects you'd like to bring in! Students will leave with several books they've made over the weekend and with the ability to make books on their own.
